How BrewBird supports your office's sustainability goals

Coffee is one of the most universal routines at work, with two-thirds of American adults drinking it daily. However, it is also one of the most quietly wasteful. Batch brewers sit on warmers and get dumped when they go cold. Single-serve pods leave plastic and aluminum behind after every cup, with capsule recycling rates sitting around only 30%.
BrewBird was built to challenge that standard. It brews one freshly-ground cup at a time in a 100% backyard-compostable pod, so you don’t have to choose between sustainability, convenience, or taste. That impact has contributed to workplaces with BrewBird achieving their sustainability goals through waste reduction and diversion, including a leading pharmaceutical company that achieved TRUE Gold zero-waste certification.
The per-machine sustainability math
We measure impact at the machine level, since that’s how offices actually deploy coffee. The average workplace BrewBird serves about 6,000 cups per year. At that volume, each brewer delivers clear environmental returns through a combination of mechanisms:
Greenhouse gas emissions avoided: roughly 1+ metric ton of CO2e saved annually per machine, from reduced food waste (avoiding about 73 kg of wasted coffee), compostable pods instead of plastic or aluminum, and energy-efficient brewing.
Plastic and aluminum diverted: about 6,000 single-use pods avoided each year, eliminating roughly 15–21 kg of plastic or aluminum waste per machine. Our packaging is 100% compostable and designed to break down in about 90 days.
Batch brew waste eliminated: traditional batch brewing averages about 55% beverage waste. BrewBird's one-cup-at-a-time model runs at 0% beverage waste, saving the equivalent of about 3,300 cups annually, or roughly 73 kg of beans that are diverted from the drain.
Pod production emissions: BrewBird's backyard-compostable bagasse fiber pods generate about 95% fewer GHG emissions during production compared with plastic pods.
Those numbers map cleanly to frameworks sustainability teams already use, including IRIS+ waste diversion and GHG avoidance metrics, plus SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), so BrewBird can sit inside the tracking system you already have.

Seeding microgreens in BrewBird's 100% backyard compostable pods
How a leading pharmaceutical campus made coffee part of its sustainability story
At a leading pharmaceutical company, the workplace facilities manager noted how BrewBird played a role in helping them achieve TRUE Gold certification — a leading industry-recognized standard from GBCI that signals a facility is measuring and improving zero-waste performance, diverting materials from landfill and incineration, and running a more circular resource system.
With 100% compostable pods, white-glove service that enabled a rapid scale-up (2 to 10 machines in a year), and simple user adoption, BrewBird made waste reduction something employees could experience with every cup, not just in a sustainability report. BrewBird has also come for annual Earth Day events, engaging people around the compostable pods through activities including growing microgreens in them. Those touchpoints keep sustainability tangible, and they keep the partnership about coffee and campus goals at the same time.
Summary
BrewBird's coffee platform is built to deliver environmental impact you can count per machine: less wasted coffee, no plastic and aluminum, lower production emissions, and a 100% backyard compostable system.
We have seen that play out with workplace partners, and can help your team achieve your sustainability goals too. If your team is chasing TRUE Gold, or you are simply tired of pods that promise circularity and deliver landfill, we would love to talk. Reach our team at sales@brewbird.com.
